Traditionals, Boomers, Millennials: How technology forms the next generation

Experience can shape our interpretations of reality, influencing our view of what we believe to be true. If you consider the collective experiences of a generation, could it be reasonable to believe that these have influenced that generation’s worldview.
Take, for instance, a generation that witnessed Kennedy’s assassination, the Vietnam War, the first man on the moon, and civil rights.  Surely this might influence a different worldview than a generation that witnessed 9/11, Enron’s collapse, and the rapid increase of smart phones and texting.

A Different World, A Different View: Japanese Millennials

life work balanceMillennial is a term to describe the generational group that is age 18-34 this year. In many places around the world they are projected to overtake the Baby Boom generation (ages 51-69 in 2015) in total numbers this year as the largest living generation. Millennials is not projected to overtake the Gen X (ages 35-50 in 2015) in number until 2028. Why does this matter? By 2025, three out of every four workers globally will be Millennials. They already make up 80% of the workforce in some companies. Soon, they will dominate the workplace and shape the future of organizations worldwide.

As for Millennials… You Got it! They Want it!

performance review - graphsI just spoke at a corporate meeting this week for a client’s clients – their annual user’s conference.  It was held at one of Hyatt’s best – nice conducive digs for considering new ideas.  The audience was pretty much split right down the middle with Boomers and Millennials.  It was a perfect opportunity to talk about a number of generational differences as they relate to trust, communication and collaboration.  So I did.

 I focused on three issues affecting how we work together, build trust, and achieve collaboration.  I specifically talked about 

  • the accelerating process of change occurring in organizations,
  • key differences within our multi-generational workforce,
  • and the impact of human individuality.
